This course provides a more detailed look at the Pro Tools system on top of the knowledge you learned in Pro Tools 101. It covers all the key concepts and skills needed to operate a Pro Tools system. The course provides the foundation for the later 200-series of courses on Pro Tools music and post production.

This course is designed for end-users with basic Pro Tools skills including:
  • Musicians

  • Sound Editors for Film or Television

Completion of the following course is recommended prior to beginning this course:
  • Pro Tools 101: Introduction to Pro Tools

At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Configure your studio and session
  • Control Pro Tools using external controllers
  • Manage session data and media files
  • Record MIDI and audio, using loop recording and advanced techniques
  • Work with time scales and virtual instruments
  • Work with Avid Elastic Audio
  • Edit and quantize MIDI and audio
  • Use audio editing and file management techniques
  • Apply editing techniques such as the use of Beat Detective for Region Looping
  • Enable, play, view, and edit automation data
  • Mix using sends, returns, plug-ins, Master Faders, and groups

Module 1
  • Customise I/O functions using the I/O Setup dialog box
  • Configure a customised MIDI setup
  • Adjust the Session view
  • Configure system settings

Module 2
  • Configure system settings
  • Recognise common control surfaces and worksurfaces used with Pro Tools
  • Appreciate the advantage of using an external controller
  • Navigate a Pro Tools session and perform basic functions using a control surface

Module 3
  • Understand the capabilities of a Pro Tools 9.0 system
  • Recognise the benefits and enhancements offered by the Complete Production Toolkit 2
  • Locate files using the Workspace browser 
  • Audition audio in a browser 
  • Import files in multiple ways
  • Work with region groups

Module 4
  • Make selections for recording 
  • Set up your session for recording 
  • Work with different MIDI input recording options 
  • Perform loop recording operations

Module 5
  • Understand the difference between Sample-based and Tick-based timescales and tracks
  • Understand the difference between plug-in virtual instruments and stand-alone virtual instruments
  • Recognise the main controls for the Transfuser, Xpand!2, Hybrid, and Structure virtual instruments
  • Work with ReWire and stand-alone virtual instruments

Module 6
  • Enable Elastic Audio on an audio track
  • Select from the available Elastic Audio plug-ins and recognize how they work
  • View and manipulate Elastic Audio Event Markers
  • Work with Elastic Audio Warp Markers to manipulate audio regions
  • Use Elastic Audio pitch transposition to transpose audio regions on Elastic Audio-enabled tracks

Module 7
  • Understand the different views available when working with MIDI data
  • Use various tools to edit your MIDI data
  • Quantize MIDI data, audio regions, and Elastic Audio events to the Grid
  • Use Real-Time Properties to dynamically change MIDI properties

  • Use region looping to quickly repeat a selection for a set duration or number of iterations
  • Use Grid mode to edit material while conforming to a specified timing grid
